Sayings from the National Conference – April 10, 2014
“So long as the present architecture of government remains intact with the prevailing political culture, the meltdown of Nigeria in the days ahead is almost inevitable.
If the voice of the youth is needed – the voice of the future, we will design a paradigm shift in this conference to focus on bridging the gap in our foundation.”
- Ms. Mosunmola Umoru, a youth delegate
“The national assembly and the conference are not in contradiction. The business of the national assembly (of parliament) is to make laws. The business of the assembly is also for oversight. The business of the national assembly is also for the confirmation of the president’s nominees.
The business of this assembly is not to make laws but to negotiate, discuss, articulate the fundamental order. The business of this assembly is to discuss and articulate the social contract.
This is different from law-making. It is important that this essential difference be understood so that distinguished delegates will assume their historic responsibilities to Nigeria.”
- Dr. Pius Tawo, Cross Rivers delegate
“Football and corruption unifies Nigeria. Once there is a football match, Nigerians are in unison. Once there is corruption, there is no religion, there is no creed, Nigerians are in unison. The greatest threat to national security is corruption.
All the uprisings we have seen from Niger Delta to the Far East are products of corruption. How do you explain a situation where a Nigerian public officer will be sleeping on a mattress of money? Money meant for pensioners. Money that has been contributed by people either in billions.
There must be something wrong. We need to conduct medical test on some of this people to see whether they are humans or see why the punitive accumulation is in them.”
- Gen. Jonathan Temlong, an elder statesman
“A nation that is unable to take care of her vulnerable citizen is not a strong nation. We need to look at strong nation strategically and see how it takes care of its vulnerable citizens.
The issue of disability is much more than that of a charity issue; it is a human right issue.
It is a development issue. And it is an issue that must be addressed using the right approach.”
- Ms. Ekaete Judith Umoh, representative of people living with disability
