LATEST UPDATE:
All set for Eddie Ugboma’s 50 years on stage celebrationsAll is set for veteran filmmaker, Eddie Ugboma’s 50 years on stage and 74th birthday celebrations holding on December 19, at the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.
Ugboma, who turned 74 earlier in the year, said: “I was going to celebrate in Asaba, Delta State but I have not heard from the governor, so we are forging ahead and we are still hoping to hear from him.”
Ugboma stated that plans have already been wrapped up to induct 75 musicians into the Hall of Fame: “The musicians are so excited. Most of them are already scrambling for a space to perform on that day. We have a retinue of musicians and comedians who will entertain, including Mr. Ibu, Charles Awurum, Ali Baba, Bovi and Julius Agwu among others. All the old generation and new generation musicians are on board and I am so proud of myself.”
On his gallery, which was supposed to be mounted in Delta State, Ugboma stated: “Man proposes but God disposes. We are doing three shows at the National Theatre and the artistes have promised to support me to mount the gallery any where I want on my own. I am still waiting for the Lagos State governor, Mr.Babatunde Fashola and Governor Uduaghan of Delta State to come to my aid.”
Meanwhile, Ugboma, who just received a lifetime achievement award in the UK said that he was overwhelmed by the tremendous love showered: “I was so impressed that while AMP and DGN are pussy footing to celebrate their chairman, the people in London appreciated me and gave me a life time achievement award; a gold plated award. I was so impressed.
“I felt very great by the massive appreciation, television and radio stations ran after me for interviews and we had palatial dinners; Nollywood was well represented. I am very proud of the musicians who remembered my contributions as a show promoter in the UK. When I was in London most of the boys I made came to celebrate me”
Does he have any regrets 50 years after? His words: “I have none. I have given so much and the millions of pounds I have made in London I invested in building an industry here. I could have bought a home in Miami and relaxed by the beach sipping champagne but because I am patriotic, my country came first.”
Ugboma is grateful to all those who have supported him for his 50 years on stage celebration: “I am grateful to High Chief Raymond Dopkesi of AIT, Ben Murray Bruce of Silverbird Group and Steve Ojo of Galaxy TV. They have saved me millions of naira by running my jingles free. We are having 19 days nonstop media blitz.”
