Who is Dominik Szoboszlai, Liverpool’s latest signing
Liverpool FC has completed the next high-profile signing of the 2023 summer transfer window. Dominik Szoboszlai, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder, will come to Anfield. Who is the Hungarian player who has already made a name for himself in the Bundesliga? Let’s explore his life and career below.
Started playing as a kid
Young Dominik started playing football at the age of 6 and a half, under the guidance of his father Zsolt Szoboszlai, himself a former player. At first, he was training with Videoton and later moved to Fonix Gold FC’s youth side, also managed by his father. In 2015, he moved to the MTK youth academy in Budapest - this is where the Austrian side RB Salzburg spotted him. He finished his training in Austria.
First senior contract
After finishing training at Salzburg’s academy, Szoboszlai made his debut with the Erste Liga side Liefering (a sub-team of Salzburg) in 2017. In his first senior match, he provided his first assist, and less than a month later, he scored his first goal. Throughout the season, he played in 42 league games and scored 16 goals for Liefering.
From the next season, he moved to the Salzburg first team playing in Austria Bundesliga. In his three seasons (that included the suspension of all football for months) he played in more than 50 matches, scored 16 goals, helped the team win the Bundesliga several times, and earned the title of “Player of the Season” in 2019-2020.
Moving to Germany
As you might expect, Szoboszlai made a name for himself on the European football scene, sparking the interest of teams from around the continent. He left Salzburg at the beginning of 2021, in exchange for a €20 million transfer fee, to continue playing with RB Leipzig in the German Bundesliga. Unfortunately, an injury prevented him from stepping on the turf before the end of the 2020-2021 season.
Once he recovered, he quickly made his presence felt on the turf, bending the odds of Betway Malawi and beyond in Leipzig’s favour whenever he was a part of the squad. He helped the club win two DFB-Pokal titles and was voted Bundesliga’s “Rookie of the Month” three times.
Moving to Liverpool
Now it’s time for Szoboszlai to continue his career in the Premier League. Liverpool FC activated his buy-out clause this month, reportedly paying around 60 million pounds to have him. The player is now moving on to face a new challenge - stand his ground in the toughest and most followed national league of the world.
“[A] really historic club, really good players, good coach, everything is good. For me, it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good,” Szoboszlai told Liverpoolfc.com.
