We Nigerians are known for our emotive way tackling issues based on sentiments rather than facts even when its stares right into our eyeballs.
Visit Nigerian social media sites daily and behold gory tales of how we conduct ourselves as a people. Let us not even go to the extreme, let’s come down to how we conduct ourselves in terms of attitude, voice pitch, facial expressions etc. Quite primeval, I dare say!
It’s ironical when people come here to rant about brutality in homes vis-a-vis, Nigerian men like that Hon. Dino character abusing their wives blah blah blah! Fact is the average Nigerian is hardwired and coded to behave in such manner. Whether man or woman.
Visit some homes and see how some women abuse younger, less privileged relatives living with them. I would not want to mention how they handle house maids because of the obvious..... We all know.
Now the kids are watching you beat your house help, they watch your husband beat you, they get beaten by bullies and teachers in school and then the house maid pours her anger on them when you are not in. They now grow up and become men and women and then the lifecycle is complete. Hon. Dino and Aluu community is now fully created.
In the different countries I have visited, It is quite easy to spot a Nigerian. We are loud, crude and if it is the type that has some money...blatantly arrogant! Imagine the other day in Schipol airport, this Nigerian guy was yelling at his folks back home on the phone and “pulling his ear” screaming “ Tell am say if I enter Naija, even God no fit save am” What! I wondered if the folks could see him pulling his ear.
Just because you have a few millions in your account, you get to a banking hall and start screaming at the top of your voice to see the manager because you cannot queue up with peasants.
You talk to your subordinates at work..........Arrogance on display
You talk to your house maid............Arrogance & brutality
Police to civilian................... Arrogance and brutality
Teachers to students............ Arrogance and brutality
Political office holders to the masses .................Arrogance
Truth is we do not have regards for each other. We do not love ourselves. We get our kicks when we oppress the weak. ( same reason why everyone wants to get rich at all cost)
We learnt all these during the prolonged Military rule in our nation’s history, where force became the only language we could understand. Now it is being passed from generation to generation. How do we change this?
