LATEST UPDATE:
APC heating the up the polity –OkonkwoChief Jude Okonkwo is a businessman of repute who has paid his dues in the business environment. He is the Chairman of the Wine and Beverages Importers Association [WBIAN] and also a social commentator on national issues. He recently spoke with Sunday Sun in Lagos on issues in the polity.
Security challenges in the country
Presently the country is bedeviled with security challenges ranging from kidnapping in the South East, the youth militancy in the Niger Delta and the insurgent in the North Eastern part of the country perpetrated by the deadly Boko Haram (Islamist sect).
Seriously the president is doing a great job on the issue through his security agencies but he needs to be more pro – active, though some breakthroughs have been made recently like the killing of many insurgents in the battle of Balmo forest where foreign insurgents were the bulk of those killed.
The firepower should continue until they are over-run, so that the country can have relative peace. Kidnapping should also be tackled headlong, while the militancy demand should be looked into considerably.
States creation
The additional state given to the South East approved by the National Conference is a step in the right direction . Their recommendation was to bring the zone at par with the other major ethnic zones was a rare demonstration of fair-mindedness that is not common in our climes these days. Albeit, the creation of 17 additional states to me is uncalled for, because some of the present states we have are not viable. So why create many states? Is it to appease some people or what? It amazes me a lot.
Political terrain
The way the opposition is heating up the polity is alarming, and accusing fingers have been pointed at them but they keep denying it. Seriously it will take the opposition APC and other political parties fifty years or more before they can win the presidency. The ruling party is waxing stronger now than before. For instance, take the recently concluded Ekiti Governorship Election where the PDP candidate Ayo Fayose won the election, they are making inroads into the South West zone now. Again APC is no more relevant in the South East zone and any Igboman that aspires to win an election on the platform of the party should forget it. APC is a dead party in the East because the way things are going, it is obvious that the South East cannot fare well under the party.
Business environment
The business environment is interesting but government needs to reduce the tariff on imported goods so that importers can bring their goods to Nigerian ports instead of neighbouring Cotonou.
This will translate into more money for the government while other sectors will benefit from the largesse.
The government again, should help importers become manufacturers. The various government agencies saddled with responsibilities at the ports are not helping matters with their activities as they are still obstructing containers in and outside the port.
