Don’t allow Nigeria’s democracy come to peril, group tells JonathanOne Voice Coalition, a non-governmental organization (NGO), has urged President Goodluck Jonathan not to allow the present democratic dispensation in the country come to peril.
In a press statement issued in Lagos, the media committee chairman of the group, Pastor Adedeji Adeleye, drew the attention of Nigerians and relevant authorities to the grave implications of the current gale of impeachments and attempted impeachment of some state governors and alleged excessive use of soldiers in the Ekiti and Osun states elections.
He stressed that impeachment should be used as a last resort when other options had failed, adding that under President Goodluck Jonathan, impeachment notices against many governors had become rampant.
On the militarisation of elections in Nigeria and its implication for 2015 election, Adeleye urged President Jonathan to maintain law and order in the country, stressing that the duty of the military was to defend the territorial integrity of the country or quell insurrection in any section of the country where the police had proved incapable of handling the situation.
His words: “The use of soldiers during election is ill-advised. Instead, the police should have been strengthened to discharge the duty of ensuring internal security, while the military is restricted to the defence of the nation’s territorial integrity.”
