LATEST UPDATE:
Nigerians spend over N1.5trn on phones in 2013 – InvestigationNigerians mobile phone users last year spent a whopping N1.5 trillion to purchase mobile devices.
Latest figure for connected lines from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), indicate that about 120 million Nigerians have been connected particularly as most individuals still use more than a network operator.
However, while it is estimated that about 30 million Nigerians may not be active phone buyers or finicky about latest technology, it is rather believed that100 million others, who are technology savvy, had averagely spent N15,000 or more depending on the social status to purchase a smartphone. This gives an estimate of N1.5 trillion spend on phones for 2013 alone for 2013.
Speaking to Daily Sun, on the estimates recently, a phone dealer at Computer Village, Ikeja, Mr. Celestine Nwosu explained that Nigerians spend more than the N1.5 trillion because some people buy high end phones ranging from N60,000 to over N100,000 to make a technology statement.
“I will put these set of people at 30 percent of Nigerians. From my experience in the industry, globally, Nigerians are perceived as people who have a taste of fashion and technology. In my estimation, Nigerians should have spent well over N3.5trillion, which is far above the budget of the Federal Government”.
Another dealer in allied products at Computer Village, Mr. Lawrence Obinna also disclosed that the size of the phone market is very significant and needs to be properly regulated to curb the influx of fake phones.
“Government agencies should not be perceived to be acting in the interest of foreigners but in the interest of Nigerians.
“For the market to be sanitized, there must be sensitization ,where key stakeholders will be cautioned on the danger inherent in buying and selling of phones. Now, it’s even good that Lagos state has passed the Consumers Bill into law and there is an agency responsible for this,” he said.
Obinna also hinted that Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), should unite and mull a single manufacturing plant in the country, where other brands can assemble or manufacture their phones, with brand names as the only difference. This will make it cheaper and readily available for Nigerians.
Daily Sun’s investigation also revealed that competition is getting stiffer between phone manufacturers as each one tries to out do others with additional features as in the case of Samsung S5 and Tecno Phanthom Z, a new product from the stable of Transsion Holdings that was launched recently.
Aside these two, other brands like Lenovo, Nokia, Infinix, Solo, Gionee, G-tide and LG are also scampering for a market share in the growing smartphone mobile market.
