The Labour Party has distanced itself from the claims by a
former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel,
that he has the party’s mandate to enter into discussions
with the Peoples Democratic Party.
Secretary of the Ogun State chapter of the party, Mr.
Oginni Olaposi, explained the party’s position in a
telephone interview with The PUNCH, on Wednesday.
He said the purported defection of the former Governor, to the PDP was in his capacity as an individual because he does not have the mandate of the party to enter into
negotiations with any party.
Olaposi said the Labour Party was independent and has
chosen to remain so adding that the party has nothing
against the person or the office of President Goodluck
Jonathan.
He stressed that the party was still in court with the former Ogun State governor and wondered if such an individual was in a position to represent the party in any capacity.
The party scribe said “This party for God’s sake does not
belong to Gbenga Daniel. It is absurd. It is even an insult
on our sensitivity for Gbenga Daniel to say that he is takin Labour Party in his portfolio to the PDP.
“I want to tell all Nigerians that we are resolute, we are
ready to win the next elections in Ogun State, with or
without OGD, he is not God, in the Labour Party, we have a big GOD and he is greater than him.
“We are not going to surrender our party and the mandate of liberation given to it by the Ogun State people. We will not give up our party. We have nothing against Mr. President.”
He noted that the former governor entered into the Labour Party in controversial circumstances.
According to him, unknown to them, the former governor
had an agenda because “he taught he could buy the party from Abuja.”
The party scribe said Labour Party was ready to contest
and win elections in Ogun State.
He stressed that the electorate in Ogun State have since
rejected the APC and the PDP and have opted for the
Labour Party.
“The reason why the party has been having a running
battle with Gbenga Daniel is that he thinks he can come
into the party and use Labour Party to trade with Aso Rock, we are saying no to that. He said.
