Why Senegal sacked Pape Thiaw
Here is why Senegal's head coach Pape Thiaw was sacked by the Senegalese football association after the 2026 World Cup exit.
The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) has explained the decision to dismiss head coach Pape Thiaw following the Teranga Lions' disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Thiaw, who took charge of the national team in December 2024, oversaw a difficult tournament in which Senegal lost their opening two group-stage matches against France and Norway.
Although they responded with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Iraq to secure one of the best third-placed spots in the competition, their World Cup journey ended in heartbreaking fashion.
Senegal looked on course for a place in the Round of 16 after taking a 2-0 lead against Belgium in the last-32. However, they suffered a dramatic collapse, conceding twice late in the game before losing 3-2 after a penalty in extra time.
The painful elimination sparked criticism from supporters and raised fresh questions about the team's direction under Thiaw. The situation was further complicated when midfielder Pape Gueye announced he would be "taking a break" from international football while the current coaching setup remained in charge.
In a statement, the FSF said the decision followed "a thorough evaluation of the sporting results and prospects of the national team," adding that Thiaw's dismissal was made "in the best interests of Senegalese football."
The federation will now begin the search for a new head coach as Senegal looks to rebuild and prepare for future international competitions.
